Twin pregnancy
A twin pregnancy, also known as a twin gestation, occurs when a woman is carrying two fetuses in her womb simultaneously. Twins can be categorized into two main types: identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic).
Identical Twins (Monozygotic Twins):
- Identical twins result from the fertilization of a single egg by a single sperm, which then splits into two embryos. This splitting can occur at various stages, leading to different types of identical twins.
- They share the same genetic material and typically have the same sex.
Fraternal Twins (Dizygotic Twins):
- Fraternal twins result from the fertilization of two separate eggs by two different sperm. They are genetically no more similar than any other siblings.
- They can be of the same sex or different sexes.
- Fraternal twins typically have their own individual amniotic sacs and placentas.
