Laparoscopic myomectomy

Laparoscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to remove uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas) while preserving the uterus. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure on the bladder or rectum.

During a laparoscopic myomectomy, a surgeon makes small incisions in the abdominal wall and inserts a laparoscope, a thin, lighted tube with a camera, and specialized surgical instruments. This approach is less invasive than traditional open surgery and typically results in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, and less scarring.

Laparoscopic myomectomy offers several advantages over open surgery, including:

  • Reduced pain and scarring: Smaller incisions result in less pain and scarring.
  • Faster recovery: Patients typically recover more quickly and spend less time in the hospital.
  • Preservation of fertility: Laparoscopic myomectomy allows for the preservation of the uterus and may be a good option for women who wish to retain their reproductive capabilities.
  • Minimal blood loss: The minimally invasive approach is associated with less blood loss during surgery.
