Cervical encerclage

Cervical cerclage, often simply referred to as "cerclage," is a surgical procedure performed during pregnancy to help prevent premature birth or late miscarriage in women who have a weakened or incompetent cervix. The cervix is the narrow, lower part of the uterus that opens during labor to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal.

In some cases, the cervix may be unable to support a pregnancy to full term, leading to early cervical dilation and the risk of preterm birth or pregnancy loss. Cervical cerclage is used to address this issue.

Here are some advantages and potential benefits of cervical cerclage:

  • Prevention of Preterm Birth: The primary advantage of cervical cerclage is its effectiveness in reducing the risk of preterm birth in women with a history of cervical insufficiency. By providing additional support to the cervix, cerclage can help maintain the pregnancy until full term, increasing the chances of a healthy baby.
  • Reduced Risk of Late Miscarriage: Cerclage can also reduce the risk of late miscarriage (second trimester) in women with cervical insufficiency, which is emotionally and physically challenging.
  • Preservation of Pregnancy: Cerclage helps to preserve pregnancies that might otherwise be lost due to cervical weakness or incompetence. This can be especially important for women who have experienced recurrent pregnancy losses.
  • Potential for Vaginal Delivery: In many cases, the cerclage can be safely removed around 37 to 38 weeks of pregnancy, allowing for a vaginal delivery. This can be advantageous because vaginal delivery is generally associated with shorter recovery times and fewer complications compared to cesarean section.
  • Individualized Care: Cervical cerclage is a personalized intervention. It is recommended based on the specific needs and history of the pregnant woman. This tailored approach can improve the chances of a successful outcome.
