Placenta previa

Placenta previa is a pregnancy complication in which the placenta, which is the organ that provides nourishment and oxygen to the developing fetus, partially or completely covers the cervix (the lower part of the uterus) in the pregnant woman's womb. This condition can pose significant risks and may require medical management.

Types of Placenta Previa:

  • Complete Placenta Previa: The placenta completely covers the cervix, obstructing the birth canal. This is a more severe form of the condition.
  • Partial Placenta Previa: In this type, the placenta partially covers the cervix.
  • Marginal Placenta Previa: The placenta is located near the edge of the cervix but doesn't completely cover it. This is the least severe form.

Symptoms and Diagnosis:

  • The most common symptom of placenta previa is painless vaginal bleeding, which can occur in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Diagnosis is typically made through ultrasound, which can determine the exact location of the placenta.
